Outreach and Distance Education

mu nursesThe MU Sinclair School of Nursing’s Nursing Outreach and Distance Education (NODE) holds an academy for directors of nursing in Missouri’s long-term care facilities. This annual academy lasts several months with six interactive videoconference meetings occurring once per month. A group comes to CSD each month for this important professional development and connects to colleagues across the sate. Topics of discussion have included power in decision making and ethics. Just wanted to share this great application of distance learning!

Getting PD over v/c

Here at CSD in the Virtual Learning Center, we have different groups connecting over videoconference for professional development.  Many of our readers know about the great Mental Health series from New Links to New Learning and BJC, but there are other PD opportunities over v/c.

Each month, Martha connects via videoconference to a SMART Board users group.  Educators from all over the U.S. and Canada connect for these videoconferences to talk about SMART Board and its applications. John Blaser of Eastchester High (Eastchester, NY) hosts. For info on this videoconference, shoot me an e-mail and I’ll send you John’s contact information.

The University of Missouri’s Sinclair School of Nursing’s NODE (Nursing Outreach and Distance Education) meets once a month over videoconference, and CSD is a site.  The nurses learn and talk about Missouri’s long-term care facilities. The nurses in St. Louis connect to others in Columbia, Springfield and other Missouri sites. The first and final meetings will be face to face in Columbia, but this is a great way to get everyone connected!

Also, the VLC connects monthly to education contacts all over the state through the Missouri Educational Technology Meeting and discuss… educational technology. Participants talk about ways to collaborate, share success stories, and network.

I’m also having more teachers in the St. Louis area connect to speakers over videoconference. Independence Elementary has latched onto this and connected teachers with KUMC and Dr. Kathy Davis to talk about Autism and Attention Deficit Disorder.

Curious about what you can do over videoconference? Throw your ideas my way- let’s see what we can do for you!
