Reader’s Workshop: Revisit and Refine Strategy Groups & Conferring

Past Readers' WorkshopThe Readers’ Workshop structure has a number of important components that require practice and refinement to obtain the instructional benefits and the student improvement that we are seeking. This opportunity on November 20, 2014 offers a deeper look at strategy groups and one-on–one conferring.

Participants will develop a more comprehensive understanding of the preparation and practices that make strategy groups and one-on-one conferring most effective for young growing readers. This full day workshop at Center of Clayton, 50 Gay Avenue, is structured for specific group facilitation for K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 participants to customize the readers workshop to those grade bands.

• Dana Humphrey is a Common Core ELA Consultant for EducationPlus™. Dana is a master teacher with 32 years of educational experience as a middle school English teacher, department chair, district curriculum coordinator and professional development presenter locally and at the state and national level.
• Jan Keenoy is a Common Core Math Consultant for EducationPlus™. Jan has been a Missouri educator for over 40 years, teaching in elementary and middle school classrooms, Parents as Teachers, and serving as an Elementary Coordinator supporting curricular, instructional, assessment planning, implementation, and providing extensive professional development.
• Lois Copeland is a 30 year veteran of elementary classroom teaching, having spent most of her career in the primary grades in the Parkway School District.

Learning How to Code

code classIn this full-day, hands-on workshop, coding is presented using drag & drop programming in a game-like, constructivist atmosphere. Today’s group, with instructor Debbie Fucoloro, are exploring the basics of programming by completing a series of tasks & puzzles. Those attending will leave EducationPlus with an understanding of how computer programs and their language work, as well as a desire to share the excitement of learning how to code with their students once the school year starts. What a great to incorporate science, technology, engineering and math into the classroom!

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math Institute for Early Childhood and Youth Development Professionals

The EducationPlus Learning Department is proud to support the ARCHS Spring Institute for Early Childhood & Youth Development Professionals.  ARCHS is hosting a full day of professional learning opportunities with a fantastic lineup of leading edge STEAM experts from across the St. Louis region.

The spring institute is designed to offer ways to learn from area educational leaders, as well as from each other with a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) from 8 am – 3:30 pm on Saturday, April 5, for just $45.

Strategies for Training Engineers In Your Modern Classroom

stemCommon Core State Standards, College and Career Readiness Standards, and the Next Generation Science Standards place great emphasis on a multi-disciplinary approach that increases interconnectedness among all disciplines and engineering.  “Putting the “E” in STEM: Strategies for Training Engineers In Your Modern Classroom” offers middle and high school teachers from all disciplines an introduction to essential principles of engineering, places to find resources, easily accessible tools, and basic ways to begin including engineering principals into their current curriculum. Curriculum coordinators and administrators are also encouraged to attend. Learn more from Dr. Bridgette Davis of Louisiana State University’s School of Education on April 21. The workshop was for math teachers at all grade levels who want to understand the Missouri Core Academic Standards (CAS) for Math and how to tie technology tools into their teaching.  Nancy and Jan, along with the participants, explored the foundation for the standards, the learning progressions, and the major shifts in content, instruction and assessment, along with the technology tools that students need to be successful.
