METC is excited to offer two, new EdTech/STEM year-long academies for the 2017-2018 school year. These two new offerings round out our tech academies schedule that includes Google for Education Academy, Library Media Specialists and Technology Leadership Academy for Teachers. Information about all our upcoming academies, workshops and conferences can be found at edplus.org/PD.
MakerEd Academy
This academy focused on the MakerEd Movement is for educators who enjoy inventing, designing and tinkering, and believe creativity and innovation are catalysts for student engagement. Maker and design thinking experiences foster a culture of asking questions, solving problems, and develop an “I can do that!” confidence in young people. When we combine problem-solving activities with technology, and the basics of rapid prototyping and digital fabrication, the sky’s the limit!
In this creative and engaging academy, you will experience a challenging and collaborative environment. The MakerEd Academy is open to anyone interested in creating habits of active thinking. You will learn the basics of making and building rough prototypes by hand using simple tools such as paper, glue, and tape, as well as experience 3D printing. We will also explore Makerspace ideas, design a space, and curate resources for a successful Maker environment.
Registration includes one-day at the 35th annual METC Conference, and 3.0 graduate credit hours are available upon request.
STEAM-ing UP STEM Academy
STEAM is everywhere! It is hard to come up with any occupation that doesn’t involve STEAM. The focus on STEM began with the notion that students need more opportunities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math related fields. The National Science Foundation estimates that 80% of the jobs created in the next decade will require some form of math and science skills. With the increase enthusiasm for Project Based Learning (PBL) these two concepts complement each other. Both STEM & PBL promote important 21st century competencies and directly connect to the ISTE Standards of Innovative Designers and Computational Thinkers.
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. In this academy, you will have the opportunity to participate in virtual field trips and regional excursions, as well as experience hands-on STEAMy activities. We will explore ideas of combining real-world activities along with problem solving and team building to come up with a solution. Come join our METC in this STEAM-tastic Academy; STEAM-ing Up STEM!
