Howie DiBlasiFeatured Speaker Howie DiBlasi presents on My Hero: Heroes & Heroines – Web Literacy & Media Skills Workshop. The mission of the MY HERO project is to use media and technology to celebrate the best of humanity. This workshop will use crowdsourcing, collaboration, writing, media skills, web literacy and technology to celebrate “Hero Stories”. The study of heroes applies across the curriculum, in all grade levels and can be an integral part of character education, media arts and computer literacy, as well as a tool for reading comprehension and the development of writing skills. Participants will learn how to define and recognize a hero, distinguish between a hero and a celebrity, and create and publish a story using web-based tools. This is a bring your own laptop with browser and wifi capability session.

Goble and Smith2013 Midwest Spotlight Educator Don Goble and Julie Smith present on Media Literacy: Pedagogy & Production. Interested in media literacy but not sure where to begin? Learn what it is, how to teach it and why it is important. Come join these media literacy evangelists as they share sure-fire ways to kickstart media literacy regardless of the age levels or curriculum that you teach. With the quick edit of a photo or of the (re)placement of music, a visual message can change quickly. At the end of this workshop, attendees will have a working knowledge of media literacy, awareness of how to implement media literacy across the curriculum, skills and ideas for implementing production use in the classroom as well as resources. This is a bring your own laptop with browser and wifi capability session.
